Image | Bingen Point after completion of the Bonneville Dam |
Date | Between February 1953 and December 1961 (estimated) |
Perspective | Facing East |
The creation of the Bonneville Pool behind Bonneville Dam submerged large portions of Bingen Point, resulting in the inlets and islands visible near the center of the photograph. The Port's initial properties (fka "Bingen West") can be seen just left and down from the center of the picture with the first Port marina (completed in early 1953) just to the left and slightly below the mill site (the source of the smoke in the photograph). An inundated Bingen Lake and the channels that would later form part of Bingen Harbor and the new Port marina can be seen just above and to the right of the center of the photo. Just above these is the former "Rees' Mill" (aka "Mt. Adams Forest Products") site. A series of dikes would ultimately be constructed (beginning in December 1961) that would isolate Bingen Lake from the Columbia River and form the western edge of Bingen Harbor. In the far lower right, the original Button Bridge and the State Route 35 and Interstate 84 (then known as Interstate 80N) interchange can be seen prior to development of the Hood River Inn and the Port of Hood River.
